Grindel Lights Up

This touched my heart, so I need to share it with our readers.  A dear friend in Germany emailed me to tell me about a memorial event called “Grindel Lights Up.”

On November 9th, the residents of a certain area of Hamburg, Germany called the Grindel, light candles to memorialize the Jewish former residents of their neighborhood.

Engraved cobblestones on the street bear the names of these former residents.  Current residents will bring a candle on Pogrom Night to commemorate the night of Novermber 9, 1938, when 400 Jews were murdered in the first stage of the Holocaust, and place it next to a cobblestone of their choice.

My friend who sent this to me said that this is “another 9-11,” since in Germany dates are written with the day first, then the month.  The flyer concludes with these words:  “Your candle will keep the memory of our former neighbors alive.”
