Introducing Our New Blogger and Friend, Elaine Robinson Beattie

    Sunday, February 10th, 2013

    Elaine Robinson Beattie

So I pondered night after night on how to introduce myself to you.  I finally decided I would begin with the present and work my way back.  Most people describe me as a creative, energetic, a self-starter, and a highly motivated visionary and entrepreneur who loves the Lord.  I am also well known for my gift of hospitality, a field of work I enjoyed for over 25 years.  In short, I would say I am called to love, lead, create and serve and I do this in various ways with the various roles and positions.

Having turned 53 last June, I find myself now newly married for the first time, a daughter with 2 siblings, a business owner, corporate coach, health leader, community organizer, workshop facilitator, speaker and friend.  This is what I do.  And yes, I’m part of the baby boomer generation.

So what do I believe?  Most importantly I believe in God; I am a woman of great faith and hope.  I believe people are basically good and that we are all born with at least one gift that allows us to be prosperous.  I believe in love, a deep passionate love of family, friends, and our life’s work.  I believe in support, coaching, teamwork, lifelong learning, mentors, diversity, girlfriends and REST.  In fact, I hope to be known as the Queen of REST.

I love God, my husband  Chuck  aka Dr. Blues, chocolate, spa-ing, brownies, traveling, girl movies, fine hotels and resorts; dining with friends, life changing sermons, dancing to great music, a good spy series , great conversations with fellow visionaries, and last but not least, I love to pray and to relax with my sweet dog, Ella Fitzgerald Robinson Beattie.

I hope to connect with you on many levels.  I will be sharing my thoughts on my favorite topics: leadership and faith.  I hope to be a carrier of goods news and encouragement.  In fact, just call me Elaine, the midwife of hope.  This is perhaps a good place to pause until next time.  Always remember these words: “I surrender, I win!”

    Happy New Year from Oops50.com

    Monday, December 31st, 2012

    Annice

It’s been 3 years since we started Oops50.com and I confess I had to search our archives to verify the date we started.  Can you believe I couldn’t’ remember?  I don’t feel too bad about it because neither could my Oops50 posse – Jane or Sadhvi.

And what a journey it’s been. We got to meet (virtually) so many baby boomer women from all over the world who not only took the time to post comments on our blog or FaceBook page but also shared their stories and life experiences with us as guest writers.

I wish I could say I became tech savvy because of this blog – I did not.  I still slog through all the social media marketing tips and don’t ever seem to gain any new awareness in that field. Forget that it changes second by second and I can scarcely remember all my passwords. In fact, I signed up for Instagram a month ago and now can’t even remember my log in name to use it. Pinterest? I don’t think so.

On a positive note, last week Jane, Sadhvi, and I treated ourselves to a fine dinner at the Highland Lake Inn to

    Celebrating!

acknowledge our success and commitment to our blog over the last 3 years. By the way, the dessert was superb.

    So Civilized

It’s been challenging for all of us because we all have real jobs (darn) and families that require enormous amounts of energy on our lives – just like you. What made the difference is that we kept on keeping on and managed to write three posts a week (well, almost, I am the weakest link) because the blog experts say that is necessary.

Starting next month, (hopefully), we will introduce you to a new Oops50 sister blogger. You’ll see why we’re so excited when she shares her stories and distinct voice with us.

So, here’s to a Happy New Year of change, more sharing, better photographs, a re-design of our blog (thanks to my brother at Chinatown Coffee, and no more memory loss.

    Happy Belated Birthday, Tina Turner!

    Monday, December 3rd, 2012

    Tina Turner

I missed it.  On Dec. 3rd, R&B Goddess, Tina Turner, had a birthday and turned 73 years old.  I love this woman.  I will never forget her performance back in the day when she was still part of Ike and Tina.  In 1971, they performed at the University of Cincinnati’s homecoming concert, and what a concert that was.  The word that described her performance of Proud Mary is electrifying.  Even though I never her saw her live again, (hate that I missed her 50th Anniversary Tour), her performances have always been electrifying.

For me, her best album ever was the 1984 album, Private Dancer.

    Private Dancer

And what a dancer she was.  In an interview, Mick Jagger told a journalist that Tina Turner taught him how to dance.  It’s a pretty funny interview when you read it now.  And, don’t miss this clip of Mick and Tina doing Brown Sugar on stage.

    Happy Belated Birthday Tina!

    We Suck at Contests

    Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

    Annice

In late August, Oops50 launched our first ever contest giving away two copies of the book, Master Class: Living Longer, Stronger and Happier by Peter Spiers, about creative retirement. And guess what? No one entered. No one. That translates to We suck at contests. So, I ask myself, is it just our failure at Oops50 to launch a contest or is it that we women baby boomers can’t get excited about a how-to-book on retirement?  Believe me, I wish we could give way a week-end for two at Shoji Retreats, an outdoor Japanese style hot tub and massage spa in the beautiful mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. But, honestly girls, we’re just not there yet.

    Shoji

Ironically, since our miserable failure in promoting on-line contests, I happened to receive a link about that very subject from a Facebook friend. It seems, we need to hire James Wedmore who knows how to create kick-butt videos because the best on-line contests involve YouTube videos. Who knew? So, for all you out there contemplating a contest, the top 3 lessons are:

    1. Motivate your audience. Oops, failed miserably.
The trick is to create an incentive that is strong enough to encourage your audience to take the time and effort to create a video. You don’t have to give away a new car, but a free supply of your product would be a great start.

    2. Give customers a voice. Oops, do women over 50 go on YouTube a lot?
Start by uploading your own video to your YouTube channel explaining the rules and other details of your contest. Contestants can then upload their entries by leaving a “video response” under your video. A YouTube contest not only can provide value to your audience, but also show that you’re listening to them. You want to give your audience a voice so they can express themselves and not simply promote your business.

    .

    3. Cash in on the social capital. Oops!
If contestants know that views, likes and shares are key to winning, they will reach out to their friends for support — effectively spreading awareness about your brand at the same time. You also can encourage contestants to tap into their social networks to cast votes in your contest.

So, until we can figure out all of the above, we decided to give the books away to two of our faithful followers: Sal from Nevada and Jean and Va from Sheville.org.

Until our next contest…I’m signing off.

Katie Couric’s Promoters Contacted Oops50.com – No Joke

    Monday, September 10th, 2012

    Annice

Last week, Oops50.com got an e-mail from a promotional manager (Angela) for Katie Couric asking our team to spread the word about her new T.V. show. This is no joke. The letter said:

“We are promoting the fall return of KATIE COURIC to Daytime television with the launch of her new nationally-syndicated show “KATIE.” Blending information, stories of the day and entertainment, the show is being touted as “sunny, sexy and smart.”  The new show will be distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television and premieres September 10th. Timely and topical, the show will include powerful segments intersecting news, entertainment, fashion, and healthy living among other topics, alongside thoughtful interviews with newsmakers, celebrities and everyday people who have extraordinary stories to tell. “

If you visit her website, it says she is celebrating women who are re-inventing themselves – Sheryl Crow, Jessica Simpson, and Jennifer Lopez – Really? Nothing against these superstars but do we REALLY care about how they re-invent themselves? Oh, and by the way, from what to what?

Now, the promoters want little old us at Oops50 to post about Katie’s return to television. And in return, they will provide us with promotional images and giveaway items including hats, coffee mugs, tee-shirts, mousepads, and water bottles from the KATIE! show. In return, they said they would help drive traffic to our site.

    Katie Giveaways

When I wrote back saying we would consider promoting the show because we like Katie, (after all, who doesn’t?) and like us, she’s over  50. I also wrote back asking Angela to explain how she was going to drive traffic to OUR site. Would Katie like to do a piece about our blog for women over 50?  Seems like a fair trade to me.

The very next day, Angela sent me another letter, not only repeating word for word what she wrote in her first letter, but giving ME a list of things to do to promote our new BFF Katie Couric.  Check out the list:

    1) Blog post on your website/blog during the campaign period (now through 9/21). Attached is an asset zip containing promotional images, logos and promo trailer.

    2) Post on your Facebook page during the campaign period.

    3) Send us a preview URL before the post would go live on your site.

    4) Host a giveaway promotion along with your post. Included in the zip file is a jpeg of the giveaway items we have give you from the Katie show to make available for your fans to win. We handle all fulfillment on our end, you can just provide your winner’s contact info at the close of the campaign.

I wrote Angela back again, saying, she did not answer my question about how she would drive traffic to our site, nor did she say whether Katie would mention our blog on her show. I also let her know that while our readers might enjoy the Katie Show, and wish her good luck, I didn’t think they cared about owning a Katie coffee mug or mousepad. Honestly, do the promoters really think we are going to take the time to promote a mega star and get nothing in return? Does that strategy work for them? Show me the money, Katie! Or, at least talk about our blog on your show? Are you listening?
