Today I talked to a colleague whom I’m very fond of and he told me he did not vote against the amendment because he believes it is wrong because the bible says it’s wrong. He is a good person, honest and would help ANYBODY. I like this man very much. He is liberal on most issues and voted for Obama. How do we change that man’s view?

And I do have to point out, in the light of day, that there was also a huge upswelling in North Carolina against the Amendment–and that gives me hope. And we do have brave legislators like Patsy Keever who worked against it. And we had business leaders like the head of Self-Help and the head of Duke Energy who worked against it. So, that’s what I have to hold onto: that and the fact that Obama just came out in favor of same sex marriage. Way to go, Mr. President!!!!! Jane

I felt like crying this morning when I heard the news. Even though this amendment does not directly affect my partner and I, I know many that it does affect and harm.
What are these “straight” people worried about?
We all work hard, pay our taxes, try to live our lives in peace, harmony and respect for others, but still continue to be treated like second class citizens simply because we want and should have the same rights that they do. When will they wake up?

Yes, it has deeply saddened many of us who live here in NC, Sadhvi. It feels as if this piece of legislation is the rallying cry for a narrow-minded right-wing mentality, upon which to further base, confirm and unleash ugliness we know is coming and haven’t seen the likes of since the Civil War broke this state in two…

And yet, while this amendment is anathema, I am not embarrassed to live in NC because a ray of light, in a person with true people-centered moral values, Patsy Keever, who was against the amendment in the NC House as our state representative, won the Democratic Party primary for US Congress’s 10th District last night, and now will be running against McHenry for that seat in the US House, a seat that underwent recent Republican gerrymandering and traditionally votes right-wing.

The only tangible way we can respond to such bias, fear and divisiveness in our state is to send legislators both to our NC House and the US Congress who can stand strong on civil and human rights, who value people above politics or skewed religious values.

We have the opportunity to work for Patsy Keever and her campaign, to change politics ‘as usual’ in our (sometimes embarrassing) state and to send a message to Congress that we are able to elect leaders that represent us, who will not make our state look as foolish as it does this morning.

This will be my fourth campaign for Patsy and I will be starting tomorrow. I hope you and your NC readers will join me.

Hola Ramapada! I might just freeze them, without the vinegar that the salsa calls for. I am just not a big fan of salsa, if you can believe that.
I made “ratatouille” last year in a large amount, and then just put it in big Ball jars, and sat it down in the freezer. It worked fine. Hey, do you need any sweet potato starts? I don’t think I am going to use mine.

Sadhvi – I totally agree with you – After holding myself back for weeks, I finally planted my vegetable starts – peas, chard, tomatoes, kale, spinach, eggplant, beets, parsnips, nasturtium, strawberries – in containers on the deck. Covered the blueberry bush and eggplant with tulle to protect from birds and insects. Parsnips are an experiment; we’ll see how that works out. In the community garden: tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, and dill are planted with beets and carrots, sweet potatoes and winter squash waiting till the time is right. So fun!

Well today I decided to make my shake pickles. Got everything ready. My friend got me a bag of snacking pickles, but 85% were bad. Hubby went to store and they threw out all their pickling pickles as they were bad. He has headed to Whole Foods in hopes to get good ones and also pick up my Dr Bronner’s soap. I am not going to buy any other soap as the Dove etc. store brands has made me break out in a rash and my skin looks like Death Valley soil. Nice to read your latest post. Happy Gardening Sadhvi…and make sure you plant some pickling cukes…as you put love into everything you do.

Nancy, I enjoyed your post. WWII seems to be something that was not talked about – it must have been horrible. I just finished reading a book called, “Sarah’s Key”. I heard they made a movie out of it. I never knew about the Holocaust growing up. It was not brought up at all. It’s a pity for that, because war is horrible.

Most all of us never prod our older living relatives for history of their lives. So the next best thing is to start a family tree with living relatives and your family. This is my hobby now and it is quite rewarding to me when I find something like my husbands grandfather who went to Siberia prison in 1915 and now find a book listing all the prisoners names. He was one of the lucky ones to come back home around 1920-22. It’s my way of keeping in touch with our roots. Now I am going to have a DNA test down to further search “My roots”. By the way I also have a tape of my parents (2 hrs worth) and will have it put on a CD – thanks.

Oh how I remember the first time you made it in Cleveland, Ohio. Remember asking Dad to get mascarpone from the market – what a time huh? I’ve been single on and off over the last 20 years, and I always found it a very helpful to figure stuff like this out! I’ve changed out parts in toilet tanks, changed pipes under my sink, replaced faucets … and even changed my own oil once!

Yes indeed, tough decision-making moments for sure. However the dollar signs pretty much straightened us out and into the abyss under the sink went Annice. I must say that while we were delving into the unknown it was most gratifying to resolve the issue easily and most effortlessly. A great lesson. As I traveled back to Cleveland by car, I watched a man changing his flat tire. I remarked to myself and my dog in the back seat, “Oh no, please do not challenge me with that opportunity for spiritual growth right now! Luna, my Golden Retriever, at the computer reading directions while I crouched down would not be quite the same support!

Jane, I used to judge my worrying nature, and after all these years, I know that like you, one cannot change how we are. Being with a man who is NOT a worrier is both a curse and a blessing. So sad is your story – let me tell you mine. I worked for a company that downsized and we had 6 secretaries to handle mostly retired presidents and VP’s (12 total). As time went by it ended up that I had to work for all these people and had a part time helper. Well the person I worked for, before the downsizing, advised me to quit as this place would give me a heart attack. Guess what? I DID have a heart attack. My advice to you is to get a bucket of water and swish your hands in it many times. Then look at the bucket when your are done. Guess What? It’s still the same water as before. It didn’t change at all with all the movement and swishing of your hands. I think one is either a worrier, or not. It seems you are. I hope you can balance that worrying nature with the same amount of contentment.

Whoa Jane! The list is so long and brings to mind my observance of my mother worrying way too much, all of the time, over 5 kids and their past, present and future. Many behaviors we pick up from our parents & repeat throughout our lives. I say break the cycle!

Bubba made nut/poppy seed rolls all the time. She was a great baker. At Easter she made this cheese that was put in a cloth to drip the liquid in it. She tied these ends of that cloth to to dining room chairs and it hung between them. It was good stuff.

Isn’t that funny Katina, I hadn’t heard that song since 1963. When Nan told me it was her first record she ever bought, I couldn’t remember it at all from the name. Then, after listening to the song in its entirety, it altered my reality, and now I can’t get it out of my head! I will come to visit you, but just me. And we will swim. And detox, and drink good wine at night with lots of good food so we have a reason to sleep in and go be in the pool before brunch, and then detox the rest of the day, to be prepared for another night – promise!

Sadhvi, Thanks for the kind words. And Annice, I agree that making a commitment to take care of ourselves is not always easy but on the other hand it’s essential if we want to thrive!

It never ceases to amaze me that even 5 minutes per day of meditation can have a profound effect on our lives!
