well the chiropractic appt was a waste of money, except that Bello was jumping into the car, so I guess he is not as bad as I thought, or was he just excited to go for a ride with me? There is a brace out there that looks good…still debating whether it’s something that will help at $179 (www.orthodog.com). in the meantime, Bello listens to the Dalai Lama chanting healing vibrations…

Sadhvi, Rather than throwing the leash out, I would get him a harness which would protect his neck and distribute the pressure points. I ve also been taking one of mine for acupuncture with great results for the short term but not so much for long term but then she has different issues. It might help get him over the hump.

@Nirado: thanks for this homeopathic tip: I use this type of “therapy” for myself, I can’t believe that I didn’t think of it. The vet is great that we have, but they are all just like the traditional doctor’s prescribing pain pills for injury. I already have an appt tomorrow with Faherty…thanks for your help.

Hi Sadhvi,
I am so sorry to hear about Bello’s accident. Poor baby. I wanted to make a couple of suggestions that may help. A homeopathic remedy Ruta Grav in 30c potency can help with that kind of accident. Take 2 pellets and dissolve in 3 oz water and hit it on the heel of your hand 100x. Then give a dropperful 2x day for a couple of days to see some relief. If you do see some, drop it to once a day for a few more days. Also John Faherty chiropractor in town treats animals. He’s really great.
Tell him Nirado sent you.

I hope Bello is better soon.

I’m one of Diane’s (and Speedy’s!) Dream Street customers who bought a fridge magnet of the poster featured here. That magnet is still on my fridge, now 1500 miles away from St. Augustine. You should have asked her about Dream Street’s bathroom, wallpapered in…well…everything. Articles, cartoons, postcards. After she sold the store and left, the feel and the merchandise was never the same. I was so happy to see her stuff in local bookstores in Prescott and Sedona, Arizona.

I absolutely love Bernard Waber books, such as The House on East Eighty-Eighth Street, where Lyle, Lyle Crocodile lives with his loving family. I also love ELOISE, who is six and lives with Nanny, her pug dog Weenie and turtle Skipperdee on the top floor of the Plaza Hotel. Illustrations are a big, big part of what makes these books so memorable to me.

Also, every June in celebration of summer freedom, I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which I checked out of the library on my first day of vacation. As I worked my way through my teens, I understood more and more in the book…

Sadhvi, I loved all of Louisa May Alcott’s books, especially Rose in Bloom. And Karlene, I’m with you on the Litte House books. I remember wishing my mother would churn our butter. The store-bought kind just didn’t have the same appeal.

I was a shy child, and books were my best friends. I loved the “Little House” series of books so much that I used to pretend that I was a pioneer girl. My favorite books growing up were any Nancy Drew book, Little Women, later, Ray Bradbury.
Books were a place I could go when the world was too much. Ha! How different it is today, when every child I see is on their iPhone doing something to take them away from the moment.

Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment, the unnamed narrator in Notes From Underground and Josef K from The Trial, Ivan from The Brothers Karamazov

I was (to use a platitude) alienated as a teenager and these characters in one way or another embodied, expressed, or addressed that alienation. I liked the perverse comedy of both Dostoevsky and Kafka.

I feel the same Diane…I have lived through many Memorial Day holiday weekends, and have never been so touched by what it is meant to signify as I was when I read my friend, Sarvananda’s “In Memoriam”.

I applaud you for having the courage to be true to yourself and follow the call to leave the group you were with. I’ve found when I’m discontent and not doing anything about it, it’s often because I’m feeling the conflict between wanting to be authentic and true to myself and at the same time not wanting to disappoint others or have them be upset with me. The older I get, the more I realize how important it is to be true to ourselves. As long as we’re living life to please others, we’re creating oiur own prison, and we’ll never live to our highest potential or be as happy or fully expressed as we could be. In the words of Ricky Nelson from the song “Garden Party”: “…ya can’t please everyone, so ya got to please yourself.”

Hi Sadhvi, Thanks for your comment and question. My answer is YES! When I feel discontent, I look at where I’ve been spending my time, to see what might be missing. Often, it’s creative expression. When I make the time to express myself creatively, whether through abstract painting, creative writing, cooking or dance, I immediately feel grounded and connected to myself, as well as to the divine, so that I lose self-consciousness and feel at one with whatever I’m doing and get into that flow state that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi talks about in his book “Flow”. It feels like I’m nourishing my soul, and I feel quite content! I hope that answers your question?

Relevant post that provided a bit of clarity for my situation: I was discontent and knew for years that I wanted to move out of a group I was engaged with; it was no longer serving my needs, but it took me 3 years to have the courage to move on; I just couldn’t announce the change, even though every meeting was a chore (or I’d come up with an excuse not to attend). I wasted energy complaining (to myself) because of the FEAR to make an exit. Thanks Barbara; I look forward to your next post.

I totally agree Jane. I wonder sometimes if it isn’t the fear factor that drives us here in the States? I mean, our media is so over the top, maybe to distract us, that we as a country are always in the mode called “alert”.
And yes, the fear of no money is what drives all of us…and guess what? Since most of the other developed countries have good to great transportation, and the US of A doesn’t, so most of us all need cars.
Living in Switzerland with no car, only my feet and my bike, made life easier simply because I didn’t have to pay for gas, maintenace, or thinking about getting a new car! Oh Oh Oh!

In November 1964, I was a senior at a high school I had only attended for three months. I was still missing “my class” whom I’d had to leave behind when we moved the summer before. The school I had moved from had a much more thorough curriculum than my new school and there were very few offerings of courses I hadn’t already had with which to fill my schedule at the new school. Consequently I was taking a shorthand and typing course at the end of the day with mostly 9th grade girls headed for secretarial school. I hadn’t developed any close friendships in that class yet, though it would soon happen, and mostly as a result of what happened on the afternoon of November 22. It was toward the very end of class, and we were all getting fidgety, and we really groaned when we heard the principal come over the loud speaker to make an announcement. At that time of day, it could only mean one of the buses was delayed, and a delay could mean more than the usual thirty minutes’ ride home. The class was stunned to hear the principal speak in an emotional voice rather than his usual businesslike clipped tones. What he had to say was startling and unreal. The President had been shot. Somehow there was a television in the room. Maybe our teacher was also the AV director for the school. Anyway, we sat in total, stunned silence while Walter Cronkite told us what they knew. The whole afternoon runs together for me, so I see myself still sitting there when he announced that President Kennedy was dead, but I believe I was at home when I learned that. Time stopped and yet swirled feverishly, and my safe world exploded. I had thought that assassinations and other horrible stories from history were just that–just stories–just events from a long-ago, pre-civilized time–that could never happen in the America I lived in, a world of advancement and steady improvement. This isn’t an event from my early teenage years, but this is an event that blocked out every other news event of my life up to that time.

Hi Sadhvi…well, I almost came out to Asheville for a crash visit, and looked you up! I’ve heard all about it being a highly creative community & have always wanted to visit. In April, I spent 2 weeks with my brother in Charlotte to help care for him…he is recovering from a serious illness. My next visit, when he is well, I’d like to tour around your beautiful state. Oh, the cherry blossoms…falling in April!

We had no TV, so the radio and newspapers were my window on the world. I remember most vividly two photographs: the young woman crying out in anguish over a slain student at Kent State when four students were gunned down by Ohio National Guardsmen during a war protest in 1970; and I remember the photo of the screaming girl running naked, along with other terrified children, down a road after being severely burned in a South Vietnamese napalm attack in 1972. So, so sad.

On a happier note, the music was good in my little town–WLS out of Chicago.

The age of innocence ended with the assassination of JFK. We were all in school and watched it on the corner black and white TV. I didn’t really know what had happened, I just knew that it was never the same after….

Aug. 5, 1962: the death of Marilyn Monroe, we were driving in the mountains of NC and I guess I was a pop culture whore at the age of 12 (and also being a current fan of Smash). That date just stuck with me, maybe a loss of innocence thing.

It was the summer of ’69, and I heard the newsman announce it on TV from up in our attic. I was sorting through old clothes from my mom, and the sound of the newscaster’s voice made me feel like this is the end of an era, and the start of another. It was eerie…

Hi! Here’s my answer: When Nixon resigned. I don’t really know why this made such an impact – I was an almost-14 year old girl and didn’t have much interest in politics. I remember watching it on tv (probably because there was no cable television back then and it was airing on all the channels)! My naivete took a big hit that afternoon – up until then, I truly believed that no one really did anything wrong on purpose!

@Ramapada: Yes, it is the “Chicken Hilton”…Sakshi always tells me they really have it made, but as all children, it’s never enough. Hey, thanks for the book tip, I will go the the library and get it to read. I’ve been making milk kefir for the hens since I cannot that much of it…I think it’s a good source of something…probiotics? for them.

Hi Sadhvi..The Chicken Hilton has a ‘tibetian look’, nice. The chickens will be more compassionate and lay better. I’m into the chickens in a new way. I just now came from the library and got Alice Walker’s book The Chicken Chronicles. It’s fall here in New Zealand. Beautiful and clear…
