    Sadhvi Shares: Nan and Me

    Sunday, April 1st, 2012

    NAN, ME, and KAREN

There are a handful of people I’ve met that have touched me deeply, and Nan is one of those. I met her in my freshman year at a college in a small town in Ohio way back in the fall of 1976.

That period is my least favorite in my entire life. In fact, Melinda, another long-time friend from way back in high school who went with me to Miami, feels the same. We have this ongoing argument as to who was the one who convinced the other to go to this college. And I know it was her who convinced me!

I first met Nan in the laundry room of the dormitory of McCracken Hall. I think I took Nan’s clothes out of the dryer, and she came in and asked what I was doing, and I yelled at her. I don’t remember really, but she does! I guess I like to show my strong emotional side (some have called it bitchiness) right away, as a sort of test. Wow, that was over 35 years ago, and whatever bond was made, it is still there.

It turns out that Nan thinks I am funny, and I think she is funny. That’s important to me. No one can be my friend if they don’t have the same sense of humor as me. I feel understood by her, and often communicated with her back then without talking. I know from experience that we are all multidimensional beings, and that language is overrated. Just ask my husband. I feel the same about Karen, who is in the picture on the lower right. I hope to write about her sometime soon.

I tend to have this curious nature in general,  and value my friends opinions for new things and good products.

So I asked Nan a few questions:

What was the name of the first record you ever bought?

Hmmm, let me think a moment. Oh, it was Sukiyaki, the song that came out in 1963 that was sung in Japanese. My mom couldn’t stand it; it drove her crazy!

    What is your favorite lipstick?

I usually use the Clinique freebies that they give out. And then, for special times, I have this one from Guerlain that is a little luxury, because it is so expensive (LIKE ALMOST $50!), and the case is so over the top, but the color and the way it makes my lips feel is really great. I really wish Guerlain would make it cheaper by not having the heavy metal case and mirror.

Which group did you like more growing up, The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?

Oh definitely The Beatles. There was something that I found dark and disturbing about the Rolling Stones.

What is the one thing you have to put on or have on that makes you feel good about leaving the house?

    A LIPSTICK TO LOVE

Well, I guess it would be my perfume. I like this one called “Artemesia” by Penhaligon. I use it all the time. It smells really clean. In the winter, I like to use this one called “For Her” by Narciso Rodriguez.  My sister, Tina, says that it smell like “sex on a stick”.

Thanks for sharing Nan. I still think my friends are cool, even if we are getting older! I’m really looking forward to this summer’s get-together. Melinda? Tina? Teresa? Mary Ann? Are you guys coming?  Karen has a pool.

    Beautiful Woman over 50: Fatimah’!

    Friday, October 7th, 2011

    FATIMAH'

I enjoy sharing women that are interesting and Fatimah’ is one of those women.  I recently met her to ask some questions in order for you to get to know her better.  She is so into music and has her own website where she is the DJ.  Finding out that we both listened to Matt the Cat and Kid Leo on WMMS, the home of the Buzzard, back in the glory days of rock in the 70′s was actually not a surprise…

What was the name of the first record you ever bought?

I remember it well…it was “Think”, by James Brown and The Famous Flames.  This song made me dance, and I love dancing.

Who was your favorite female singer while growing up?

It was “Esther Phillips”. Esther’s voice is sultry & unique.  Take a listen…

What is the one thing you have to put on that makes you feel good about leaving the house?

I have to say, it’s an essential oil called “Ylang Ylang” and I only use the one from the company, Young Living.  It makes me feel empowered, seductive, creative, and magnetic.

What is your favorite comfort food?

It’s either Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen Daz’s Butter Pecan ice cream, or, this Greek Honey Vanilla yogurt that I get at the health food store.

What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about being over 50?

If there was anything that is my least favorite thing about being over 50, I guess it would be that I don’t have the physical strength and tenacity that I used to have: I don’t last like I used to!  But my favorite things are I feel more conscious, more aware, and feel like I have wisdom.

What is your most favorite thing to do that is “creative”?

Dancing, singing, drumming, storytelling: I love them all!

Do you feel optimistic about the future?  And, what keeps you going?

Oh yes.  I do feel optimistic about the future!  And what keeps me going are the possibilities.  The unknown.  The trusting.  And the knowing.

What is part of your daily routine that makes you feel good?

I have a internet TV Station,One Outrageous place on the Internet” ‘Shabazz 7777‘  WRNU Internet TV.

Check it out by clicking here: http://www.viewerone.com/channels/wrnu

I get such a good feeling and so much enjoyment while selecting the music or Informative Documentaries for each show, knowing that those good vibes are being passed along and shared; that is something that I love to do!  Tune in from 7pm – 7am every day to feel it!

Amazing Women over 50: SheVille of Western NC, Part II

    Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

This is a continuation of our interview with the founders of SheVille of Western North Carolina!  Here’s Part II!  Check out the site:  http://www.sheville.org/.

Jean Cassidy and Va Boyle at The Chocolate Lounge

Oops50:  Were there some low points where you felt like giving up?

Jean: There were points I certainly hit where I felt discouraged and said, ‘let’s just sell it.’

Va: But she never really meant that.

Jean: I remember, at one point, where we met with a guy who had helped to develop Yahoo, and he was great, but he asked us for $10,000 to help us develop the site—and that was discouraging, since we didn’t have $10,000. As a result, however, we had to learn as we went. There were lots of points along the way where we hit technical nightmares—those were some labor-intensive moments.

Va: Two great people helped us:  Kathryn Bradley was our first webmaster, and she hung in there with us, put up with us, and worked her little butt off.  Corianne Billings was another, who worked on our logo.

Jean: And Anne-Marie Dany, who created our first PHP design…

Va: …and Kerry Daniel, who did sales and marketing.

    Jean: It takes a village!

Va: But we’ve been in the black from the beginning.  That’s because we inherited some good advertising clients.  One of our main purposes from the beginning has been to be a good advertising venue for small businesses—at rates they can afford.

Jean: Our main problem in the beginning is that we had all these terrific ideas and so many things we wanted to do with the site, so we first had to figure out who we are and just what the Sheville site is.  I mean, at first people thought we were a site just for lesbians, rather than a community magazine for women from all walks of life!  It took us a while to figure out the site’s personality. The first time we really felt like we nailed it was when we got the site’s main Menu sorted out.

Oops50:  What’s your vision for the future?

Va: We want to get better established, so that more people know about us and can take advantage of what the site has to offer.

Jean: My vision?  When you go on vacation and drive through local communities, I want Sheville to be the place you turn to in order to find out what’s going on in those communities—such as where farm dinners are, what’s  going on in women’s education, all that.  We want to rent the Sheville concept out to women in a bunch of different towns—at a reasonable rate—so they can tailor Sheville to their community.  (more…)

    Beautiful Women over 50: Katina!

    Monday, April 25th, 2011

    KATINA

I’ve known Katina since 1983.  We were young and had no fears about anything, and, we laughed a lot.  We share the same guru, we share astrologically, the same degree of moon and sun, and we share that wonderful connection of being loved and accepted by each other, no matter what.

I hope you enjoy what I found out about Katina that I didn’t know before this little interview.

    1.  What was the name of the first record you ever bought?

I remember buying the Beatles album with the song, “I wanna hold your hand”.

    2.  Who did you like more, The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?

    The Beatles.

    3.  What is the one thing you have to put on or have on that makes you feel good before leaving the house?

    My push-up bra from Chantelle!

    4.  What’s your favorite lipstick?

I like lip glosses instead of lipstick.  I like to go to Sephora online and try different ones.  I like one now that’s called “Sephora: Nectar Shine”.  It’s in a tube.

    5.  What is your favorite comfort food?

I would have to say it’s a glass of Shiraz or a Zinfadel.  Lately I really like the Predator 2008 Red Zinfadel that’s around $13.99 a bottle.  Oh, and Archer Farms Cheddar Sourdough Twists!

    6.  What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about being over 50?

My favorite thing is that I still feel and look OK.

My least favorite thing is that I have been dealing with a back problem for the last 7 years…and thankfully it’s getting better and I am starting to feel like my old self again.

    7.  What is your most favorite thing to do that is “creative”?

Meditation is my most favorite thing to do because it makes me feel so good and connected and I’m creating awareness within.

    Ah This!
