“Be Joyful, though you have considered all the facts.” Wendell Berry
Wendell Berry’s advice is wise, humorous and inspiring. I try to hang onto it in the midst of facts that are not all that encouraging. Our politicians are not doing themselves proud, for the most part – Senator Jay Rockefeller being a major exception. After a recent road-trip across much of rural America, however, I am encouraged by witnessing strong rural advocates speaking out for strong PUBLIC OPTION health insurance reform and other common-sense approaches to government. Earl Durnell, a lifelong cattle rancher and owner of a Missouri century farm in Cabool, wrote in one of his weekly columns that “Diarrhea of the vocal cords seems to infect hardcore, no-plan Republicans nationwide.” I find this encouraging. Just like Molly Irvine, who never gave up, even in the midst of many Texans who fervently wished her to, it is heartening to be reminded that there are many wise, humorous and inspiring people out there – and yes, even in the “reddest” states. So, BE JOYFUL, but don’t forget to badger all of your senators and representatives!
