Sadhvi Sez: It’s a Miracle called Spring!

    Friday, April 29th, 2011

    BEAUTIFUL SPRING FLOWER "WEEDS"

So much intensity these days, no?  Just about everyone I talk to is overwhelmed…oh oh oh what to do?  I actually sprained my ankle on Monday and had to take a few days off to get better.  I mean, I couldn’t walk!  But, it felt so good to STOP.  Hey, maybe next time I will just be able to take off and not have to have an “accident”?

There is thankfully, Spring which has sprung, which is looking more like Summer around my neck of the woods, but I won’t go into that right now.  This year it’s nothing short of a miracle to see the grass growing and the flowers opening in my garden.

    "ATHENS CALYCANTHUS"

A friend named “Buddha” once told me that I had to get a plant that had the most amazing smell of fresh cut cantaloupe.  I had never heard of it until I read in a garden book about a type of sweet shrub or calycanthus called “Athens”.  I bought three baby plants, and put them in a spot that I was having difficulty in figuring out what to do with it.  The plants thrived and just the other day, I walked out on the front porch and smelled the most divine smell of fresh cut cantaloupe!  I ran to the side to these lime-yellow flowers and took a picture so you could see.  If it grows in your area, I highly recommend having one in your yard.

You might remember that I planted a lettuce bed last fall with a mix of the remaining seeds from different lettuces that I had in my collection.  I called it “Sadhvi’s Fall Mesclun Mix”.

    LAST FALLS SALAD BED

I had lettuce just about until the New Year, when the 6th frost and the cold nights of winter pretty much did them in.  I didn’t dig up the wilted and dead looking plants like I usually do to clean up my beds for spring.  To my surprise, all those dead plants came back and now I have full heads of beautiful salad in abundance.  Something that I will remember for the future.

And also because I can’t do everything that my mind wants me to these days, it seems that some miracles happen on account of that, because having these strong, full heads of all my favorite lettuce is a real treat!

    NEW SPRING SALAD BED

I also planted a new lettuce bed and will soon start to thin that out for salads.  Growing salad greens is quite possible the easiest thing you can do.  No skills required.  Just some seeds and some soil.  And no store bought salad can compare to that buttery taste of greeness that you get with ones from your backyard.

What else?  Oh. The first Oriental poppy opened this morning!  I had to take a picture to share because it is magnificent!  I love poppies, and there are so many waiting to open.  I can’t wait.  The sheer delight of not knowing what color or type is really a thrill that I also highly recommend to anyone who has some seed and some soil.

    FIRST ORIENTAL POPPY!

The first bearded Iris made its Spring 2011 appearance a few days ago…this is the one that smells like Welch’s Grape Juice that is really intoxicating.

    THE FIRST IRIS

I am feeling so much better thanks to Spring.  I hope you are enjoying nature wherever you happen to be in this crazy world!

Amazing Women over 50: SheVille of Western NC, Part II

    Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

This is a continuation of our interview with the founders of SheVille of Western North Carolina!  Here’s Part II!  Check out the site:  http://www.sheville.org/.

Jean Cassidy and Va Boyle at The Chocolate Lounge

Oops50:  Were there some low points where you felt like giving up?

Jean: There were points I certainly hit where I felt discouraged and said, ‘let’s just sell it.’

Va: But she never really meant that.

Jean: I remember, at one point, where we met with a guy who had helped to develop Yahoo, and he was great, but he asked us for $10,000 to help us develop the site—and that was discouraging, since we didn’t have $10,000. As a result, however, we had to learn as we went. There were lots of points along the way where we hit technical nightmares—those were some labor-intensive moments.

Va: Two great people helped us:  Kathryn Bradley was our first webmaster, and she hung in there with us, put up with us, and worked her little butt off.  Corianne Billings was another, who worked on our logo.

Jean: And Anne-Marie Dany, who created our first PHP design…

Va: …and Kerry Daniel, who did sales and marketing.

    Jean: It takes a village!

Va: But we’ve been in the black from the beginning.  That’s because we inherited some good advertising clients.  One of our main purposes from the beginning has been to be a good advertising venue for small businesses—at rates they can afford.

Jean: Our main problem in the beginning is that we had all these terrific ideas and so many things we wanted to do with the site, so we first had to figure out who we are and just what the Sheville site is.  I mean, at first people thought we were a site just for lesbians, rather than a community magazine for women from all walks of life!  It took us a while to figure out the site’s personality. The first time we really felt like we nailed it was when we got the site’s main Menu sorted out.

Oops50:  What’s your vision for the future?

Va: We want to get better established, so that more people know about us and can take advantage of what the site has to offer.

Jean: My vision?  When you go on vacation and drive through local communities, I want Sheville to be the place you turn to in order to find out what’s going on in those communities—such as where farm dinners are, what’s  going on in women’s education, all that.  We want to rent the Sheville concept out to women in a bunch of different towns—at a reasonable rate—so they can tailor Sheville to their community.  (more…)

    Beautiful Women over 50: Katina!

    Monday, April 25th, 2011

    KATINA

I’ve known Katina since 1983.  We were young and had no fears about anything, and, we laughed a lot.  We share the same guru, we share astrologically, the same degree of moon and sun, and we share that wonderful connection of being loved and accepted by each other, no matter what.

I hope you enjoy what I found out about Katina that I didn’t know before this little interview.

    1.  What was the name of the first record you ever bought?

I remember buying the Beatles album with the song, “I wanna hold your hand”.

    2.  Who did you like more, The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?

    The Beatles.

    3.  What is the one thing you have to put on or have on that makes you feel good before leaving the house?

    My push-up bra from Chantelle!

    4.  What’s your favorite lipstick?

I like lip glosses instead of lipstick.  I like to go to Sephora online and try different ones.  I like one now that’s called “Sephora: Nectar Shine”.  It’s in a tube.

    5.  What is your favorite comfort food?

I would have to say it’s a glass of Shiraz or a Zinfadel.  Lately I really like the Predator 2008 Red Zinfadel that’s around $13.99 a bottle.  Oh, and Archer Farms Cheddar Sourdough Twists!

    6.  What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about being over 50?

My favorite thing is that I still feel and look OK.

My least favorite thing is that I have been dealing with a back problem for the last 7 years…and thankfully it’s getting better and I am starting to feel like my old self again.

    7.  What is your most favorite thing to do that is “creative”?

Meditation is my most favorite thing to do because it makes me feel so good and connected and I’m creating awareness within.

    Ah This!

Amazing Women over 50: SheVille of Western North Carolina: Part I

    Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Oops50 had the pleasure this week of interviewing two of the owners of SheVille of Western North Carolina: Jean Cassidy and Va Boyle.  SheVille is a wonderful, thoughtful and thought-provoking site that Jean and Va own with Lee Lehman, where they pull together “local, regional, national, and international” information that is “about women’s lives and education, sustainability and the environment, the arts and writing, community people and events.”  Although the site is tailored to “women of Western North Carolina,” and offers affordable advertising for any small business owner, there is something there of interest to all women (and many men), of all ages and locations.

Jean Cassidy, Jane Hatley, and Va Boyle at the Chocolate Lounge

Here’s Part I of the interview:

Oops50:  Why did you all decide to build Sheville into the kind of site it is today, with all of its interesting articles and topics?

Jean: Well, it’s never been a money thing.  I used to feel really lonely when I looked at women’s magazines, dealing with stuff like breast implants and liposuction—which have never been my reason for being.  I knew that women have marvelous intelligences, so I thought, ‘how can we not focus on this together?’  I wanted a place where we could join articles on sustainability with ones on women’s education, women’s businesses—things that make life deeper, much richer, things that are ‘life’s blood’ for women.

Oops50:  So sustainability is a big part of your focus?

Va: Yes!  And I have always been interested in conservation.  I grew up, after all,  in a household with a Victory Garden! (more…)

Sadhvi Sez: The World is too Full to Talk About

    Friday, April 15th, 2011

    SADHVI

It’s been tough, as in, hard to keep up with life, this past week or so for me.

Mercury, the planet of communications and anything to do with that (i.e. computers, cell phones, etc.) went retrograde and still has a week to go until it goes direct.

No one is getting back to anyone with any of the many ways we can be in touch: cell phones, email, texting; it feels like we all need a nap from the world as we know it.

    At least I do.

For this week’s post I thought I would share a really good recipe that I use for making bread that’s about as simple as brushing your teeth, except since I left the flour in the bowl for a day, it didn’t turn out to be all that easy to make!  So I won’t be sharing that just yet (no pictures!).

Then I thought I’d share some pictures of the green explosion of plants and flowers since there have been days almost reaching 90 degrees here, but also tornadoes, hail, constant winds and thunder and lightning.  Every day is so different from the last.  It’s feels unreal.

I won’t even go into politics, earthquakes, nuclear meltdowns, Monsanto, the price of gas, or anything else that I cannot bear to hear about any more.

So instead I will share with you a poem from Rumi because some things don’t change, and he expresses what I cannot on how I really feel lately.

    There is a field

    out beyond ideas of wrongdoing

    and rightdoing

    there is a field.

    I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass

the world is too full to talk about.
