    Care-giving for Husbands and Dogs

    Monday, February 28th, 2011

    Annice

Just when I thought my care-taking days and nights were diminishing, life decided otherwise.  For starters, my husband’s surgery to pin his hip back in place failed, and ten days later he was back in the hospital for a full-blown hip replacement.  While I know this is a very common procedure, it doesn’t mean it’s easy or pain-free, not to mention what it’s been like for moi.  This time, the doctor recommended home health care, and thank god for Care Partners (and drugs).

Care Partners is providing quality nurses, physical therapists and even an occupational therapist who come to our house for support and care which is not only needed but greatly appreciated.   But, it’s a slow recovery, and my husband hates being dependent on anyone, even me.  And he won’t let me insert a photo of him doing his physical therapy, claiming he has privacy issues.

And for those of you who asked about my sweet rescue, Gus, I’m happy to report that his anal infection is practically gone and he’s doing much better thanks to the very expensive auto-immune drug treatment he was on for thirty days.  Now, he/we have a new problem.  Well, it’s not entirely new as he already had a bad knee (ACL) so, you can imagine the beating his knee took while being severely constipated and forced to squat to do his business.  This all happened while Len was in the hospital, and I had to actually help Gus (all 85 lbs. of him) get up and down despite the customized dog bed I had made for him and Carli.  Thank you Kathleen for making such cool looking beds for both my dogs.

In between Len’s surgery, I found myself scurrying home to help Gus go out and then finally taking him to the vet – very difficult getting him into the car.  The doc gave him a stronger anti-inflammatory (short term because it could damage the liver) and after 2 days he was improving.  Now he is back to himself and Len is home and I’m exhausted.

And just when I was feeling sorry for myself, I turned on Dr. Oz (daytime T.V. is quite an experience), and  on that particular day I saw a short piece about a young mother who has three (NOT 1 but 3!) autistic children.  That certainly put it all in perspective for me.

Beautiful Women over 50: Peggy Sands!

    PEGGY SANDS

Peggy Sands is not only a beautiful woman over 50, but she’s an artist that I like a lot.  And since I don’t like everything that I see these days that is called “art”, and I didn’t know that she did such beautiful paintings, I wanted to share her with you.

She paints murals.  She paints with colors that make me squeal. Go to her website and buy some of her paintings.  Or have her make a mural for your bedroom or living room.  The world needs more art and more artists like her.

WAITING FOR YOU IN MY GARDEN

Just for fun, I asked her to answer 5 questions recently, and here is what she said:

    1. What was the name of the first record you ever bought?

    Rubber Soul: THE BEATLES

    THE BEATLES: RUBBER SOUL

    2. What is the one thing you have to put on or have on that makes you feel good about leaving the house?  And, what is your favorite perfume?

It’s a bracelet I got for Christmas that makes me feel really special when I remember to wear it.  And Nina Ricci L’Air De Temps is my favorite perfume.

    REMEMBERING TUSCANY I

    ELAND PASSAGE

    BOYNTON CANYON

    3. What is your favorite comfort food?

Almonds and raisins maybe?  No, wait, I can’t do comfort food – I’m on the diet from hell to try to revive my adrenals and thyroid.

Oh, I know, oatmeal raisin cookies or Miso soup (Can you believe it? Miso? Comfort? So embarrassing!).

    4. Have you found the perfect bra?

Yes! One from Victoria’s Secret, I got it years ago and I still like it a lot.

    5. What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about being over 50?

I never ever think about it.  But, if I have to think about it, the least favorite I suppose is wrinkles and the body falling apart slowly but surely.  And the best is loving and accepting myself, and not beating myself up anymore, and becoming whole.

Great Sites for Women Over 50!

    Thursday, February 24th, 2011

    Jane

Just a quick post to bring to our attention a wonderful site for women over 50.  It’s called “Music After 50″ and it’s all about “people learning, and playing music in their 50′s, 60′s and beyond.”  Here is the link:

    http://www.musicafter50.com/

I highly recommend it to anyone who has 1) always wanted to learn to play the tuba but never had the time or nerve to learn 2) wishes they had not quit those piano lessons in college 3) wants to sing!

The site offers articles such as “The Health Benefits of Playing an Instrument after 50,” “Starting an Instrument after 50,” “Finding a Music Teacher,”  “Returning to an Instrument,” etc.  And they have an online store for instructional DVD’s!

I urge our readers to check it out!

And while I’m talking about music, visit Paradise Music (see the ad on our site), where you can buy all kinds of c.d.’s of inspirational music, including ones that help you through guided meditation, heal your pets with meditation, etc.  It’s also a great place to buy cards with c.d.’s of music enclosed–and it’s where you can get c.d.’s of natural sounds, such as wolf calls or rain or the ocean.  Check it out at Paradise Music!  Thanks.

Attention Women of all Ages: Your Voices are Urgently Needed!

    AMANA AILE SHEBAR

Years ago I was the Title X Training manager for the state of New Mexico and had many opportunities to work with Planned Parenthood and its affiliates  nationwide.  The services that Title X provides to women of childbearing age are vast and vital, and are efficiently and compassionately offered to clients across all walks of life: women with insurance (who could be denied coverage even under threat of death) and women on entitlement programs such as Medicaid.  Efforts to totally defund these Title X programs and to deny coverage via insurance claims will destroy mainstream, dependable sources of health care like Planned Parenthood.  These efforts are gaining momentum every day among Republican and Blue Dog legislators and your voice is urgently needed!

We are facing the possibility of tremendous and unimaginable setbacks in women’s health care with several bills being debated in Congress now.  We must speak out or as a nation, we will soon lose our precious democratic values: that each person is promised life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Please speak out through Planned Parenthood or by going to NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Your voices can help to stop the undermining of women’s hard fought rights in determining the number and the spacing of their offspring, and to assist all women of childbearing age in receiving the reproductive health care services they need.

Women are under siege in this current congressional climate, and in order to understand more about the situation with the Republican anti-women agenda and the proposed bills, this interview (click below), is worth viewing.

A War on Women”: DN! Exclusive with Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards on GOP Bills Targeting Abortion and Reproductive Rights

If you haven’t already done so, sign on to the letters and petitions that are being delivered to Congress on behalf of all women in America.

Your voices have never been so urgently needed, in all the decades since Roe vs. Wade.  Will you add your voice?
