    Going Away Shoes

Last Friday night, I had the pleasure of hearing Jill McCorkle read from her new book at our local bookstore, Malaprop’s. Hot off the press, Going Away Shoes  is a collection of eleven short stories that you must read.  I am sure you will love these stories because they’re all about us – women.

Never mind that over the years, her fiction has been selected four times by The New York Times Book Review for its Notable Books of the Year list.

    Going Away Shoes

And never mind that I personally had the chance to work with her in 2005 when I was at the Sewanee Writer’s Conference where I experienced first-hand her southern twang and wit.  Jill’s characters will seduce you because they are spirited women, just like us, who fall in and out of love, use tupperware and pyrex, live with the ex-wife’s picture hanging in the house, take care of an aging mother, and drove a Karmin Ghia in high school.

With each story you won’t know whether to laugh or cry as you experience the drama of her character’s everyday life.  And, as women over fifty, we all know our every day life with family and friends is fraught with enough drama to fill a full-length novel/mini-series, let alone 11 short stories.  Jill knows that too.  So, whether her character gets her boobs adjusted based on her husband’s preference, gets divorced, or thinks there should be an “escape clause” in marriage, she has our full attention.  At the end of the book, you might find yourself saying, “How dare she write about all our secrets.”  And, like me, you will agree that it’s okay because McCorkle’s voice is authentic – full of tenderness, humor, and compassion, and that’s all we can ask for.

Oops 50 Humor:You think you’ve got problems in this Economy?

You think you’ve got problems in this Economy?

I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.

I ordered a burger at McDonald’s and the kid behind the counter asked, “Can you afford fries with that?”

CEO’s are now playing miniature golf.

If the bank returns your check marked “Insufficient Funds” you call them and ask if they meant you or them.

Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM.

McDonalds is selling the Quarter Ouncer.

Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children’s names.

A truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico.

Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting.

Motel Six won’t leave the light on anymore.

The Mafia is laying off judges.

    Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.

Congress says they are looking into this Bernard Madoff scandal.  Oh Great!! The guy who made $50 Billion disappear is being investigated by the people who made $1.5 Trillion disappear!

Jane’s World: Week One on Only Liquids!

    Jane

    Jane

Note to our readers:  I found out last week that one of my oldest friends has Stage 3 ovarian cancer and is heading into months of chemotherapy.  Thinking of her going through that makes my little problem with losing weight pale by comparison.  And her attitude about the whole thing–that she’s going to face this cancer down and not think about anyone else’s experience with cancer or take on fear but instead focus on staying positive– has given me a new boost of courage.  After all, if she can do that, I can certainly handle this. But I’m sending this out on the blog to ask all of you to keep her in your thoughts and prayers this week and in the coming months.  She’s an incredibly strong person, but she could use a village of strong women to help her get through this.

We started the program for real this week:  all liquids, all day, every day of the week.  It completely intimidated me to think about it before; and the thought of having nothing to chew on for 12 weeks almost drove me away from the program.  But now, whether because I’ve been on such a low calorie menu for the past two weeks that my brain is not functioning or because I’m just so determined to do this, finally, at this point in my life, it doesn’t seem all that hard.  I’m surviving–and even enjoying it–which made my doctor look at me with some puzzlement.  But, consider this:  I don’t have to think about what I’m going to eat; I don’t have to shop for groceries (other than filling out my form each week, specifying how many packets of Optifast I need); and, since my wonderful husband is cooking for himself and the kids, I don’t have to plan meals or cook dinner (to be fair, Tom has always cooked at least half of our meals anyway, but it’s nice to get rid of the other half).  All this and milkshakes at every meal!  What more could a girl want?

I do worry a little bit that I may get really sick of milkshakes by the 10th week (especially since it falls around the time for Christmas dinner), but I am determined to keep my eye on the prize, which, for me, is not only the weight loss but also–and almost more importantly–that I might actually be able to get rid of my stupid C-PAP machine for breathing at night (sleep apnea).  One of the guys in the program said that he lost 50 pounds on the program and was able to get rid of his, so I now know it can be done–although I do have to say that it’s totally humiliating to think that my sleep apnea is caused by having a little too much fat in my throat! SadhviSez “It’s “Blog Action Day” October 15th 2009!

    Sadhvi

Today is the annual Blog Action Day www.blogactionday.org held every October 15th uniting the world’s bloggers and their posts on the same issue,  the same day, with the aim of sparking discussion of global importance.  Blog Action Day 2009 will be one of the largest-ever social change events on the web.  This year, it’s all about Climate Change.  And this is what I have to say about it:

Yes the climate is changing.  But really, so is everyone and everything including me.  Every second really.  I think the climate was always changing…and the whole planet, since the beginning of time, for that matter.  But these days there seems to be not only a question, but a movement regarding how to stop it.  The changes happening are pretty apparent to me, and I do believe that by 2012 things will be even more so.  There are lots of opinions and of course very strong feelings on both sides.  I have family members who don’t think there is any climate change happening.  I have other friends who are stock piling again (remember Y2K?) so that when the end comes, they will have food.  I don’t want to get into who is right and who is not, because there is no right or wrong.  You have some things that, if easy, might be something that you want to have some fun with.  After all, life is for learning and as a human being who has a certain awareness level that is more than a slug, these 3 things might be something to try, and will actually help to emit less carbon omissions in the process!

    1.  GROW SOME OF YOUR OWN FOOD!!!  If you have some dirt, or some space for  pots on your balcony, you should try gardening. It’s actually more addicting and satisfying than FaceBook.

     2.  EAT 3 MEALS AND DO NOT EAT AT ANY FAST FOOD PLACES!!! Ok, you have to work 2 jobs, you’re having a hard time making ends meet, and you think you have to eat fast food because you have no time to cook. Wrong! Fast Food is not good food for your body, it is expensive, and it will not be satisfying. So eat a breakfast, pack a lunch, and sit down and eat some dinner, hopefully cooked by someone who loves you.

3.) And the last is easy, if you are lucky enough to be in a town that has access to local organic farms and food like I do: BUY LOCAL and become a LOCOVORE!!!

In honor of Blog Action Day 2009, www.blogactionday.org  I’m writing in solidarity with this on-line event that unites bloggers worldwide around one topic.  This year’s topic is Climate Change.  Why?  Because it not only threatens our environment now, it threatens our environment for generations to come.

I’m not an expert on climate change, nor is my life free of environmental sins.  I’m still evolving.  Being aware is always the first step.  Several weeks ago, I attended the Southeast Women’s Herbal Conference www.sewisewoman.com where over 500 women came together in the exquisite mountains of Western North Carolina to practice and preserve the Wise Woman Tradition through simple living, earth-based healing, and local plants.  I want to take this space to salute the woman who founded the conference, Corinna Wood, herbalist, teacher, and friend.  The SEWHC is a place where women can celebrate an entire week-end honoring Mother Earth, and there’s always 2010.

There were many take aways from the conference, and I’d like to share one that is healing and easy.  Susun Weed, the herbal guru for women, was the keynote speaker, and she impressed on us menopausal and post menopausal women the importance of drinking herbal infusions.  I’d like to share two infusions that I am preparing routinely.  So, throw away those teabags and start drinking fresh herbal teas.  My favroite two are:
